Over the past weeks, students in elementary school have gained a new perspective on the captain’s role in a football match. The physical education department, along with Mrs. Sandra Garcia and Mrs. Zulma Jimenez, have led a wonderful initiative called The Fair Play Campaign which has brought another perspective on resolving conflicts while promoting our main values at CAS: respect for others, honesty when giving an opinion, and solidarity. Students themselves are not only referees, but also work together to resolve conflicts, and promote healthy competition by respecting others’ opinions, taking turns, and playing together.
Like a regular football match, a referee uses cards with defined consequences; students decide which actions receive a yellow card or a red card, while the captain has the responsibility of helping fellow students come to an agreement should miscommunication or conflict arise.
So far, the results of this initiative have shown many positive insights: disciplinary discussions after recesses have decreased, and students have even been encouraged to request tournaments which use this model to resolve conflicts.
