Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day is based on a story from the Roman Empire from around 269-270 AD. Saint Valentine was a priest who was tragically executed on the 14th of February because he defied the law of the Emperor Claudius whose rule was that the young soldiers couldn’t marry. Saint Valentine married people in secret. Other legends tell that he was executed for falling in love with the daughter of his jailer and sent her letters addressed from “Your Valentine.” Today, Valentine’s Day celebrates love and relationships on February 14.
Valentine’s day around the World
Normally, Valentine’s is a celebration for love, couples, and relationships, although it can also be celebrated between friends and family. On Valentine’s Day, couples celebrate the tradition of giving red roses, chocolates, and love letters. In Colombia. we celebrate Amor y Amistad in September, but in countries such as the USA, Spain, and Argentina among many others Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14th.
Valentine’s Day in CAS
At CAS, our 10th graders organized the whole day, creating a variety of fun activities for our students and teachers to enjoy the celebration of Valentine’s; this year, a few highlights were: photo booths, bracelets, anonymous letters, and song dedications. Adding to the spirit, members of the Valentine’s committee came dressed up in Cupid outfits or in Valentine’s colors: red, pink and white. This year, our Prom 2026 did an outstanding job with the support of everyone in the Valentine’s committee, making everyone feel welcome and happy.
“It was a very good activity which allowed kids to understand how different countries from around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day. It promotes global citizenship and gives students a chance to practice their English,” said Mr. Carlos Espitia, our grade 8 Language Arts teacher.
To conclude, this celebration is a day filled with happiness and joy when people can enjoy the company of others and couples can share their love for one another. Valentine’s is a great day to get to know new friends and having a great time with everyone.
