As part of the 1st term Language Arts reading plan, our 6th grade students explored the powerful novel, Harbor Me, by acclaimed author Jacqueline Woodson. The book, which touches on themes of friendship, identity, and resilience, became a meaningful literary journey for the students throughout the term.
To reflect on their understanding and connection with the story, students were tasked with designing and presenting dioramas that represented what they considered to be the most significant setting in the novel. These handcrafted dioramas visually captured key scenes and places, filled with emotional depth and creativity.
The culminating event took place in the Media Center, where students presented their work in pairs and explained why they selected a particular scene from the story, discussing the events that occurred, as they reflected on the importance of the setting within the narrative. The oral presentations allowed students to demonstrate not only their comprehension but also their speaking and analytical skills.
This project was a perfect example of how literature can be experienced beyond the page—through visual storytelling, critical thinking, and personal interpretation. It was inspiring to see how each student connected differently to the story and how they expressed these connections through art and speech.
Congratulations to all the 6th graders for their thoughtful work.
