Last Saturday, February 14th, our preschool parents were invited by our team of self-contained teachers to visit the school and gain deeper insight about how their children learn at CAS. The workshop began with an explanation of how the self-contained areas are articulated throughout each term through thematic units.
Through fun, hands-on activities, parents explored the different methodologies our teachers implement in the classroom to promote learning in a meaningful, engaging, and creative way. Parents participated in literacy activities such as listening to stories, identifying characters and settings, and using retelling strategies.
They also discovered that letter sounds combine to form words, thus gaining a clearer understanding of the strong foundation we build in Language and Literacy during the early years.
By working with concrete materials in learning centers, parents experienced how mathematical concepts such as shape, color, and quantity are taught through exploration and practice. In addition, by participating in motor activities, parents understood how essential it is to provide children with opportunities to develop fine motor skills such as cutting, proper pencil grasp, coloring, painting, and early writing.
At the end of the workshop, parents left with a clearer understanding of our teaching approach and practical ideas to support their children’s learning at home.
