During our recent play day, primary students were treated to a brand-new activity: the very first Flea Market. The excitement was palpable as students picked out items from home to sell and imagined all the treasures that they might buy from their classmates.
The Flea Market was held in the coliseum where students gathered and displayed their products neatly on tables – even teachers joined in, browsing and bargain hunting with the same curiosity and joy shown by the students. For many, it was their very first experience buying and selling.
There was an impressive array of items, each with a story or memory, ready for a new chapter. As students shuffled through items and explored what was on hand, the coliseum buzzed with laughter and chatter. Students explored each table, picking out items, even negotiating a discount. The pleasure of finding the “best deal” painted itself on the faces of our students as they lit up with a bright smile.
All primary grades participated in the Flea Market, one after another, reinforcing the underlying learning goal: applying math skills by calculating totals, checking balances, and tracking gains and expenditures.
As the Flea Market wrapped, it had proven to be an enriching community event, full of school spirit and fun, with our students having gained skills, knowledge and experience that will be useful throughout their lives.
