A journey where curiosity becomes creativity and students discover their voice through art.
Art education is a space where curiosity, creativity, and reflection come together. At CAS Colombo American School, the plastic arts offer students the opportunity to explore ideas, experiment with materials, and develop their own artistic voice as they grow.
“The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.”
— Frida Kahlo
At CAS Colombo American School, this idea resonates deeply within our Art Department. In primary school, exploration and working with different materials are truly significant, as students begin entering the world of art through images and materials.
Students create because they feel the impulse to express themselves, to experiment, and to discover materials, colors, and forms. At this age, it is natural to find spaces for spontaneous creation. Through guided exploration, students discover their tastes and preferences and realize that art is not only about drawing or painting; it is also a meaningful moment of communication.
In middle school, this spontaneous expression becomes meaningful experimentation.
Students enter a world where they begin to communicate what they feel; creating a meaningful visual language with shapes, colors, and textures. Art becomes a subject of inquiry and critical thinking. This is where students realize that art is not only about creating images, but also about making decisions, developing ideas, and understanding that artistic creation requires both freedom and structure.
By high school, we enter a stage of reflection. Students begin exploring the deeper dimensions of their personal voice, where everything they create has intention. Their work involves research, the development of concepts, and critical reflection on their artistic processes.
Because in the end, art education is not only about creating images—it is about helping students discover their voice and understand the world through creativity.
