Since February 2026, Colombo American School has introduced UFLI Foundations, a new phonics program that is transforming how our students learn to read. Based on the Science of Reading, this program uses structured, research-based strategies to help children develop essential skills like recognizing sounds, connecting them to letters, and building words with confidence.
UFLI stands out because it is explicit and systematic, what means that students learn step by step in a clear and organized way. Research from the University of Florida Literacy Institute shows that this approach strengthens reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, giving all learners, especially early readers, a strong foundation for success.
Each lesson at CAS follows engaging and purposeful steps: students begin with phonemic awareness, then move to visual and auditory drills, practice blending sounds into words, and finish by learning a new concept. This consistent routine keeps students active, focused, and excited while reinforcing their learning every day.
The impact has been impressive; students are highly motivated and eager to participate. At CAS, we are proud to provide a program that not only teaches children how to read but also inspires a lifelong love for learning.
