Last Wednesday, May 13th, three 8th grade students were selected by Language Arts teacher Carlos Espitia to participate in a special virtual meeting with students and teachers from Berks Catholic High School. Accompanied by Diana Ariza, the students had the opportunity to connect with peers from across the globe and reflect on their experiences as part of the Pen Pal Project.
The purpose of the meeting was to share opinions about the project, discuss what students enjoyed the most, and explore ideas for future generations of participants. Both schools expressed how meaningful and successful the experience had been. More than just an academic activity, the Pen Pal Project opened the door to new friendships, perspectives, and cultural understanding.
Evolution over the years.
Over the past few years, the project has become one of the most memorable experiences for many students. What started as a simple classroom activity designed to strengthen writing skills gradually evolved into a meaningful cultural exchange between Colombian and American students.
First, the project mainly focused on practicing written communication in Language Arts class. Today, however, it has become much more than that. The experience has shown that education becomes more powerful when students can connect their learning to real human experiences and authentic conversations.
Cultural differences.
One of the most interesting aspects of the project was discovering the cultural differences between students. Although there were some misunderstandings at first, the letters allowed teenagers to learn about each other’s traditions, food, music, school life, and celebrations.
Colombian students shared stories about local festivities and family-centered traditions, while American students described their own lifestyles and routines. While some differences were surprising, students also realized how much they had in common. The project helped them understand that, despite living in different countries, teenagers often share similar emotions, interests, and experiences.
Through creativity and communication, students formed meaningful connections that crossed borders and languages.
Enriched students
By the end of the project, students had gained much more than stronger writing abilities. They developed confidence in communicating with others, improved their understanding of different cultures, and expanded their perspective of the world around them.
For many students, the experience was a reminder that even people who live far away can connect in meaningful ways. The project encouraged global awareness and demonstrated how something as simple as a letter can create long-lasting relationships between people and cultures.
Started in 2024, the Pen Pal Project has connected students from Colombia and United States through letters exchanged in class. Through these personal conversations, students have been able to strengthen their writing skills while learning about another culture in an authentic and engaging way.
Final thoughts
In the end, the project proved that even a simple exchange of letters can create powerful connections between people from different cultures. Beyond improving writing skills, students gained new perspectives, built friendships, and developed a deeper understanding of the world around them.
The experience demonstrated that, despite the distance between countries and cultures, empathy, curiosity, and communication can bring people together—one letter at a time.
