Last week, our English class broke away from the usual quiet rhythm of school and turned into a space full of lively discussions and fascinating perspectives. The reason? Six colorful hats that completely changed the way we understood a story. Through a creative classroom activity inspired by the “Six Thinking Hats” method, we explored the hidden meanings of The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini in a dynamic and engaging way.
Instead of answering traditional reading-check questions, our teacher introduced a different approach to analyzing the novel. Students formed groups of six, and each person received a hat of a different color. Every hat represented a unique perspective for responding to questions related to the events and themes developed throughout the chapters.
The white hats focused on facts and specific information. The red hats explored emotions and personal reactions. The black hats analyzed conflicts, risks, and negative situations within the story, while the yellow hats searched for positive aspects and hopeful moments. The green hats examined symbols, creativity, and hidden meanings, and the blue hats organized and summarized the discussion.
Wearing these colorful hats made the activity feel fun and interactive rather than stressful or repetitive. Instead of simply answering questions from memory, students were encouraged to participate actively, share ideas, and approach the story from different points of view. The activity also created opportunities for meaningful discussions, especially when students had to defend perspectives that challenged their usual way of thinking.
For me, this class dynamic helped us understand the characters and central themes of The Kite Runner on a much deeper level. Through discussion, we explored topics such as guilt, friendship, redemption, family, and cultural identity. Analyzing these themes gave the novel greater meaning and encouraged us to think beyond the traditional way we usually approach books in class.
More importantly, the activity reminded us that stories—and even life itself—can be understood in many different ways. Sometimes, the deeper meaning of things is hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered if we are willing to look from another perspective. In the end, a few colorful hats opened the door to reflection, discussion, and a richer understanding of both literature and ourselves.
