Only four days in Colombia’s Coffee Region were enough to reveal the incredible richness of our country in every possible way

On June 9th, the eighth-grade students from Colombo American School traveled to the Eje Cafetero on an academic field trip that brought together learning from a variety of subjects. Throughout the journey, we explored the Coffee Region from different perspectives, including nature, history, mathematics, and human values. What we didn’t expect, however, was that this academic trip would become one of the most unforgettable experiences we have ever shared. Every stop taught us something new about our country and allowed us to appreciate its beauty in a deeper way.

Our First Stop: Armenia

Our journey began in Armenia. From the moment we arrived, we could hardly contain our excitement as we looked forward to discovering everything this beautiful region had to offer.

Our first destination was Granja Mamá Lulú, where we learned about the traditional farms of the Coffee Region, the crops that are grown there, and the native plants that surround them. Visiting the farm showed us how different rural life is from life in the city. It was a humbling experience that helped us appreciate the dedication and hard work farmers put into their daily lives.

Later, we met two arrieros, the traditional muleteers of the region. They explained the clothing they wear and showed us the items they carry in their carriel, the iconic leather bag that has become a symbol of the Coffee Region. Learning about these traditions helped us better understand an important part of Colombia’s cultural heritage.

Our second day was dedicated to exploring nature.

We visited the Botanical Garden, a place filled with peace and beauty. Walking through its trails reminded us how plants and animals thrive when their habitats are protected and respected.

Later, we entered one of the most magical places of the trip—the Butterfly House. Watching butterflies land gently on our hands while admiring the vibrant patterns on their wings was an unforgettable experience. Moments like these reminded us how extraordinary Colombia’s biodiversity truly is.

That afternoon, we visited Parque Recuca, where we immersed ourselves in the fascinating world of coffee. We learned about every stage of the coffee-making process, from planting and harvesting to roasting and tasting. Most importantly, we gained a new appreciation for the hard work of the coffee-growing families whose dedication has made Colombian coffee famous around the world.

To make the experience even more memorable, we had the opportunity to pick coffee beans ourselves and experience, if only for a few minutes, what it feels like to be a coffee farmer.

The Majesty of the Cocora Valley

On our third day, we visited the breathtaking Valle de Cocora.

Standing among the towering wax palms made me feel incredibly proud of our country. The mountains, the forests, and the iconic palm trees create a landscape unlike any other. Hiking through the valley allowed us to appreciate the natural beauty that makes Colombia so unique.

Later, we visited Salento, one of the most representative towns of the Coffee Region. Its colorful architecture, welcoming atmosphere, and rich traditions beautifully preserve Colombia’s history and cultural identity. Walking through its streets felt like stepping into another era while celebrating everything that makes our country special.

A Lesson Beyond the Classroom

Our final day offered one of the most meaningful experiences of the entire trip.

We had the opportunity to donate school supplies to local children. Seeing the joy on their faces was incredibly moving and reminded us how powerful even small acts of kindness can be.

This experience opened our eyes to the different realities that many people face every day. It reminded us that not everyone has access to the same opportunities and encouraged us to value what we have while finding ways to support others whenever we can.

An Unforgettable Journey

If I had to describe this trip in just one word, it would be unforgettable.

Although the trip was designed as an academic experience, sharing it with my classmates and teachers made it so much more than that. Along the way, we learned about Colombia’s geography, history, biodiversity, economy, and traditions, but we also learned valuable lessons about gratitude, empathy, and community.

This journey helped me discover aspects of my own culture that I had never truly appreciated before. Looking back, I realize that the memories we created together are just as valuable as everything we learned in the classroom.

Without a doubt, I would take this trip again in a heartbeat.
